Why we built Puhelo
Real talk from a small team in Helsinki.
We think faster than we type. The idea is already there, fully formed, and then we spend the next two minutes pecking it out one key at a time. Typing is the bottleneck between what is in your head and what lands on the screen.
We started Puhelo because dictation on the Mac never felt good enough to actually use. It was slow, it was robotic, and you spent more time fixing the text than you saved. So you gave up and went back to the keyboard.
We wanted something different. You hold one key, you talk like a normal person, and the words show up clean and punctuated right where your cursor already is. No window to open, no copy and paste, no fighting it. You talk, it writes, you keep moving.
Three things matter to us, and we will not ship around them:
- It should feel instant. Speaking should be the fastest way to get words onto your Mac. If it is slower than typing, we have failed.
- It should learn how you write. Your names, your tone, the way you say things. The more you use it, the less you should have to fix. That is the whole point.
- It should respect you. Your voice is processed in Europe and thrown away the moment it becomes text. We never keep recordings and we never sell anything about you.
Puhelo is in beta. It is early and we are honest about that. Some things are rough, and we are fixing them in the open, week by week. If something annoys you, tell us, because that is exactly how it gets better.
Our goal is simple to say and hard to earn. Make talking the fastest way to write on a computer, in any language, in any app, and make it good enough that you forget you are dictating at all.
